50 Portraits In Fifty Days, The Starting Point.

Despite the cold and the drab light Fran & I decided to head off into Leeds to the area inbetween the Royal Armories and Brewery Wharf. We decided to start with the rusty backdrop that we had discovered last Sunday, although we were not sure how many people would be about.

The plan was to set up one light stand with a shoot through umbrella, and use a Lumopro 180 manual flash triggered wirelessly, mixing flash with the ambient. Unfortunately the ambient light was very low so the best mix I could achieve was 70% flash to 30% ambient.

Now that everything was set, all we needed were people to approach and ask if we could take their portrait, which would be simple. Actually, its nerve racking walking up to a complete stranger and asking if you could take their picture for a project, but after three people saying “no thank you” the next person I asked said yes, I was so nervous and excited I did not even ask him his name, so I have called him Mr Trust, he was willing to trust me and this is his portrait. I thanked him, gave him a card and said he would be able to see his image on our WordPress blog and if he liked it, I would send him a copy resized for Facebook. With a new burst of confidence I then set out to ask the next complete stranger. So, how did we do to today? Did we get more than one portrait today? Find out over the next few days!
